Background of the study:
Stress in industrial environments is increasingly recognized as a factor contributing to genetic mutations among workers. In Port Harcourt City, factory workers are often exposed to both physical and psychological stressors, which may lead to alterations in their genetic material. Recent studies have demonstrated that prolonged exposure to stressful conditions, combined with chemical agents, can induce mutations in key regulatory genes (Anyanwu, 2023). These stress-induced mutations can have long-term implications for individual health, including increased susceptibility to diseases and reduced work productivity (Obi, 2024). Additionally, emerging research highlights the role of occupational stress in triggering epigenetic changes that may be passed on to future generations (Okonkwo, 2025). By investigating the genetic impacts of chronic stress among factory workers, this study aims to bridge the gap between occupational health and genetic research. It will also explore potential preventive measures and strategies for mitigating the adverse effects of stress in industrial settings, thereby informing workplace health policies and employee support systems.
Statement of the problem:
Factory workers in Port Harcourt are exposed to multiple stressors that may cause genetic mutations, yet little research has been conducted on the molecular effects of such stress in this population. The lack of specific data on stress-induced genetic changes limits the development of effective occupational health strategies. This study intends to address this research gap and inform policy decisions.
Objectives of the study:

Research Hypotheses:
Significance of the study:
The study is significant as it links occupational stress with genetic mutations, providing valuable insights for developing preventive health strategies and enhancing workplace safety in Port Harcourt (Anyanwu, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This research is limited to factory workers in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area and examines stress-induced genetic mutations. It does not include non-industrial occupational settings or factors unrelated to stress.
